Chanel, imitated

February 18, 2009

What do you think of this?

1992 Vogue Italia, shot by Steven Meisel.

Vogue Paris March 09, by Mert & Marcus

I don’t really love this cover. I never thought of  a Chanel girl to be chic in this way— jewelleries, logos, the overrated brow-less look and heavy makeup. But it is a rather striking cover, very simple and style-focus.

Carine has been putting new models  on the cover of important issues (March, September). Usually, her favourite girls get to front it, Natasha Poly nabbed both March & September for 07, Lara Stone did March 08. But these days, it’s Anna Selezneva, Iris Strubeggar making their debuts for such issues— very surprising picks, but surely everyone loves something unpredictable.

The model looks remarkably similar- the eyes, cheekbones, jaw…its not the same girl right?

Also, I agree this kind of image doesn’t come to mind when one thinks of Chanel.
However, not really loving the current almost too plain Chanel ads either.

considering she was styled as a member of the village people kirsten looks great.
today’s covers are either too wishy-washy or an eye-sore. Amazing statement cover; love the strong chanel/early 90s reference.
    but that airbrushing…
one of the best paris vogue covers in years.
this i will have to drop 20.

Its quite a strong cover i think. The pictorial with Iris is not bad and I read she cut her hair ultra short specially for the issue.
Some designers gave their versions of the classic Chanel jacket and there’s an interesting article on retreated fashionista and almost-icon Paloma Picasso.
In all I think the issue lived up to its cover.Strong but nothing spectacular.

kirsten was big time during the end of supermodel dum and the rise of Kate Moss. Any major show and she walked it. She was also one of the first to admit that she had to watch what she ate.
