NYFW review: Peter Som, Proenza Schouler, Thakoon and Herrera

September 9, 2008

A week before showing, Peter Som described his collection as ‘relaxed’. And judging from the ultra soft fabrics and the pockets in almost every look, this collection is so made for ladies who go for casual lunches, looking effortless chic. The show transitioned from neutral colours to beautiful bold florals, which made it look like there is nothing much new— still very Peter Som but with a touch of lightness that spells “spring’s here!”. As I am a big fan of all asian designers in NY, I really hope that he can step up to his own game and bring something new to the table. Through out the years I have taken notice of what his aesthetics are: understated elegance, but after so many seasons I am still hoping for more from him. Let’s look forward to his last Bill Blass show. (Images, video)

Is Alice Dellal the new muse of the Proenza Schouler duo? Besides the styling & makeup, the grunge and the rebellious element were all there— leather, exposed zippers and gloves. My favourite has got to be those pants and the frictional dresses towards the end but overall, not as strong as the previous season’s. I like to see them do pretty not avant garde or rock-star. They have celebrity/socialite clients like Lauren Santo Domingo and Gwyneth Paltrow, I don’t think they will buy into this Spring collection anytime soon. They shouldn’t have stepped too out of the box. Plus, as I see all those loose and flowy looks, I really miss the times when they would create sexy, glamourous bustiers. (images)

Actually, this season in New York, it is really about seeing how some ones-to-watch young designers are following up to their success. There are many directions that they can go—  steer towards commercialism, stay true to themselves or give a surprise to their audiences. Thakoon seems to be keeping calm in the midst of all the hoopla. It started with some tight-fitting dresses and the silhouette got looser, with prints that make the looks a little Granny-like because of the frumpiness. But the true killers are the PVC dress and the interesting prints— very mature and moody yet sophisticated. Whenever I think of Carolina Herrera, I will think of very pretty feminine dresses that have been highly coveted by socialites and powerwomen who would wear them to cocktail parties/events. This is where you will never see a shapeless or complicated creation. For this collection I love the sultry red colour palette and the frills. You can start picturing Renee Zellweger in many of these already. (images, video)

Love Thakoon and Herrera!! Thakoon’s strappy print dresses are gorgeous. And Herrera’s jewel tone dresses are spectacular.
