Where’s the talent?

July 24, 2008

I just read this article about how Lauren Conrad doesn’t really design her collection at all from and to be honest, I am getting very very annoyed with celebrity brands.

Not long ago there were rumours buzzing at The Imagist that due to insufficient fundings and support, a few talented young designers in New York have decided either not to show during fashion week (see the sky-high costs here) or to simply show a more ‘intimate presentation’ (showrooms anyone?) for their collection. For the record, unless they are showing off-schedule, I couldn’t spot Charlotte Ronson, Zang Toi and Benjamin Cho in the NYFW lineup.  (Latest update: Peter Som is out at Bill Blass because the label’s show has been canned due to financial woes)

Then let’s think about how Some People had so willingly invested money into building LAUREN CONRAD’s clothing line, letting her have her runway show and all. On the other hand, the young guns of the New York fashion scene have to compete like body’s business for that precious $200,000 prize award at CFDA every year to get enough support.

So what if celebrities are the biggest money tree nowadays? It is really hurting to see how Some People are ruining fashion. Right now no one can feel the impact yet, but in a long run, things are going to change, and you might start seeing the likes of Chanel and Chloe selling logo tees again and again.

So true. I always found it unfair how she ‘rose to fame’ because of her show. She got to work at Teen Vogue, People’s Revolution, have her own line, it really isn’t fair how she gets all these things thrown her way when other designers really have to scrape things together. But I guess that’s the world and industry today thanks to the media and reality TV. Isn’t weird now to think that you can launch your career by being on TV?

In fashion its ‘CELEBration’ all the way, I just read Vogue UK Daily News. They are very serious about celebrities, their style(??) and their lines. Well if even Vogue UK speaks about the ‘lovely Southern Belle Jessica Simpson’ then its time for a new fashion bible isn’t it? And she has her own lines in whatever too of course…..
I have read that Vogue US has lost advertorials to ELLE US which has the most now. I can guess why that is…..
I read it on gossip site but nevertheless I can believe its true!

I couldn’t agree more! It’s disgustingly annoying how “fashionable” you can be just by being a celeb and get piled by tons of cash.

People are WORSHIPPING them despite the fact that all they have to do, is to put on the ensemble their stylist hung on their door nobs every morning!

I don’t get her fashion line….it was supposed to be “high fashion” ….and its not. Period.

So true and yet so disturbing! Unfortunately, the world is more fascinated with what the Olsen twins are wearing than what is REAL fashion. *roll eyes*
