Do you support celeb clothing lines?

March 15, 2008

I don’t.

The existance of celeb collections are seriously ruining new design talents who are truly talented but fighting to get exposure and sponsors. People like to invest in celebs because they are the commercial themselves. Their clothes sell because they are photographed wearing them everywhere they go and there are tons of fans following their style. Common people are actually more interested in celeb labels than designer labels.
I didn’t know when this trend has started but I just feel that it is unfair to real designers. How good would it be if the fresh talents get to have a chance to stage a runway show instead of those untrained celebs who come up with trashy designs? Unless the pieces are really good, like they are up to professional standard but that hardly happens. Most of them look either too plain or too over-the-top, but really, they still sell.
Have you heard that even May Anderson, model and Kid Rock’s girlfriend, is also coming up with a clothing line? Yes, even her.

i agree, the whole thing has got out of hand now, it seems like EVERYONE is starting a clothing line. they aren’t qualified to design clothes and most of the time it’s just them taking credit for other peoples work, thats what happened with Kate Moss’s line for Topshop.

one exception though is twenty8twelve by sienna and savannah miller, as savannah actually went to the london college of fashion, and the clothes are actually nice.

Usually these celebs don’t even design the clothes but dictate their whims and ideas to a team.Even Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen have put out a line. Its like shoving their egocentric style down our throats and people get fooled into buying it and the celebs laugh their way to the bank!

I think Lauren Conrad actually works on her designs and wears her own clothes. She is going to fashion school and that is the career she wants after her 15 minutes are up. She has always wanted a career in fashion, so this is not just a hobby for her. Why do you assume she has no design talent just because she is a celeb? I think her start up line fits her style and a lot of people like it.

Yeah, but they usually disappear after 1 or 2 seasons.

I remember last season, everyone was ohhhing and ahhhing about Gwen Stefani and JLo’s new collections. But they sorta disappear this season.

I sort of have respect for Gwen Stefani’s stuff though… she’s been designing and wearing her own clothes since high school.

The only line I would buy from a celeb is Gwen Stefani’s Harajuku Lovers and LAMB and thats it. Her line is true to gwen and thats what I like about it. But forget about other celeb lines.

Celebs have been taking over the clothing fashion industry like they have with front covers of magazines which are the fashion models job.
