Smoking is bad. I don’t think I need to explain any more about that. It really gets on my nerves to see so many models smoking at the backstage of the fashion shows. Some says that it helps to kill their hunger and boredom or just simply relieve stress… but do they know how bad it is for the skin? Come on, it’s their faces that earn them a living. What’s worse, fashion editorials constantly feature models smoking… Aren’t they a bunch of bad influence?

Smoking seems to have become omnipresent in both reality and editorials. I could practically smell the intoxicating smoke wafting of the pages of so many fashion magazine editorials. Seeing all those young models backstage destroying their bodies with all that smoke backstage is just sad. If health officials were so worried about the negative influence of thin models on young girls, why has nothing been said about the negative influence of the models smoking habits??.

I dunno. I mean, smoking is bad for you, true. But you can’t let the fact they smoke diminish your favoritism over them. I’m a HUGE Gemma fan. She is amazing, I love her, learned so much about her. But come on now we gotta be a little realistic. The job is stressful and they’re *constantly* moving. All models smoke, you just gotta live with it. Besides, would you rather them be anorexic and putting that on young women or the smoking? True, the smoking suppresses their appetite but it probably also keeps them awake and moving. Not that I’m supporting it but you can’t be over zealous about this kind of stuff. It’s just the way it is. They’re still the amazing people you thought they were.

First, when a french woman, a lifelong smoker and drinker, dies at 107 years old and does NOT die from a smoking related illness, one has to question whether the causality of lung cancer is fully established. Further, when one looks at American lifestyle choices, such as spraying cans of RAID indoors, one notes that there are many causative factors (intentionally) overlooked in most major anti-smoking studies.
Third, when the government wants to ban a common and casual habit, take notice. They simply want you to let them tell you what to do. Judging by the several threads I’ve read re: Gemma smoking, the comments are staggeringly ignorant of the facts. It’s all “ewwww, smoking is like, so gross!”
And somehow I doubt the comments were all posted by schoolgirls.
Having been on the production staff of many fashion shows, I can assure you that you should be concerned about all the COCAINE they’re doing. That shit’ll FUCK YOU UP. Cigarettes? I’d be more worried about can after can of hair spray in their faces.
Gemma, don’t listen to the silly ones - they don’t know you like I do.

amber valletta smokes?? isn’t she supposed to be into yoga and a healthy life?? i guess we shouldn’t be surprised that they all smoke. they are so young, and at that age no one thinks about their skin or health. i’m not condoning it — i hate smoking — but that would be the reality (and i agree with ellis, i’m sure the other drugs are worse). they have hair, makeup, photographers and photoshop to erase any of the lines smoking causes. i mean, i’d like to see what kate moss looks like before she’s airbrushed!

Don’t say Coco Rocha! Oh god I hope Coco doesn’t smoke. I love her soo much but I can really understand how the job is stressful going to many cities and staying up late and waking up early in the mourning. I used to smoke and I was only 15 yrs old. I stole some cigs and I thought one was enough then another one would be that bad. Then as you know it got atticting and I actually stopped cause I had no choice I hated to stop but in the long run I feel much better now that I don’t smoke. So I can also understand how people can get addicited and how hard it is to quit the habit.

I was modeling for 6 years and it’s hard not to smoke when everyone around you smokes. Especially when 80% of work time are just WAITING. Waiting for hair and make-up to be done, waiting for rehearsal, waiting for set up lighting, waiting for other 100 models get their make-up and hair done….so I smoke, drink lots coffee and play with my phone all the time.
well I’d managed to quit soon after stop modeling…

Wow, I never realised so much models smoke.
However, I don’t think we’re in a position to judge them.
Of course smoking is bad, we’re not retarded, but give these girls a break! Their job actually is quite stressful & all, what with the whole skinny era & traveling & everything.
Plus, just because one smokes doesn’t mean they’re a bad person.

Its no shocking surprise these girls smoke actually, i mean its a common vice not just among models but also among the young urban professionals; in my office there are those innocent looking faces like Gemma Ward who smokes but if you see their faces it looks like they don’t smoke at all. I’ve seen Carmen Kass smoke the first time during the Cannes Victoria’s Secret show backstage on FTV. And Eleonora Bose on FTV again. Well there was a picture of Adriana Lima smoking while backstage in Victoria’s Secret show. I know its unhealthy but we dont know anything about them except seeing them on TV! I have to say there are those really models who is proactive about healthy living like Inguna Butane (read it in Vogue); Caroline Trentini, Liya Kebede, Christy Turlington of course! but gosh Snejana really looks Anorexic!

And once it was supposed to be so sexy to smoke. It was a symbol for the femme fatale and the free spirit independent woman. This has changed very fast over the years. I’d miss the heavy smoking Moss though. Ah well, don’t worry about their skins, tons of make-up done by the best visagists, photoshop, airbrush and voila…….so the models does go on smoking and not only these young women. Funny that smoking is now supposed as being rebellious! Where has freedom gone? Isn’t freedom to be boss over your own body out of fashion?

I think smoking is awful! Practically ALL the models!! But I know two models that don’t: carol trentini and gisele! Yeah, gisele used to smoke, but she stopped 4 years ago.

There’s a lot of waiting around in modelling, but there’s this new invention called a book…it helps pass the time… eating is good too. Oh sorry, forgot. Fashion is all about looking good in clothes, not looking good naked.
…But as someone else has stated, smoking is not the problem…snorting is. Cocaine. How to gain a personality and lose your mind.
Sure smoking is not a sin, what was once considered rebellious and therefore glamourous is now slow suicide and everyone is the boss of their own body (hmm…then why cave in to the pressure to be skinny?) but I have a problem with this because sheep tend to confuse models with role models.

Lily Cole smokes American Spirit. Coco Rocha caused a scene in Gaultier backstage smoking and saying a quote that made anti-smoking groups in raged. The video has been pulled from TMZ. There are only a handful top models who dont smoke like Tyra, Karolina K., Doutzen, Julia Stegner, Heidi Klum, Caroline Trentini and Ali Michael.

Blasted! It’s disgusting! Just because you have the money to fix the damage it does to your face doesn’t change the current foul oder… Additionally, I think although it’s called a “Stress relief” it’s just a pathetic ploy and holding onto teenage and foolish rebellion.
