UK Graduate Fashion Week

June 9, 2007 · No Comments

I have decided to blog about this event since Alber Elbaz, creative director of LANVIN, and Victoria Beckham are among the judges of the competition. I was thinking, this must be a big thing. Basically, it is organized by River Island and annually, it honours and discovers the best of the aspiring fashion design talents from UK. Some 47 colleges participated, there were 20 catwalk shows and 25,000 students contributed work. The prestigious River Island Gold Award, presented for the most outstanding collection in the Gala Show, carries an incredible £20,000 prize for the winning student, and is the only Award of its kind within UK Fashion Education.

I noticed that some of the designs are very dramatic in a sense that they are quite unwearable. I also noticed that there are loads of neon colours being used. They look very Christopher Kane-ish. Since this is their only opportunity to showcase their talents, the students were trying hard to cramp in every bit of their creativity into their work. I can sense how tough this competition is to all the students.

the panel of judges: Victoria Beckham is the center of attention as usual and I LOVE Alber Elbaz, he’s adorable!
